Energy transition – the path towards net zero

About this course

The course will be taught between 12-08-2024 - 23-08-2024 online and 26-08-2024 - 30-08-2024 on the TU/e Campus. General content: International Challenge Based Learning Summer Course. Some challenges need to be solved in a global setting, such as the Energy Transition. Participants get the opportunity to develop skills to bring the latest research on Energy Technology to application within an international environment. Additionally, we spend time on short courses on R&D and international project management, including communication across cultures. By attending academic conference talks given by Energy Technology Experts from across the globe, and forming international teams, participants experience the gap between research and society AND attempt to bridge that gap in their project. A real challenge! Challenge: The continuous growth in energy demands is putting ever more stress on climate and environment. In line with the IPCC, we work on the target of net zero CO2-emissions by 2050. This goal cannot be achieved with the new zero-emission technologies emerging alone but needs to be accompanied by mitigation strategies from energy saving to carbon capture utilization and storage technologies developed and implemented at an international level. This years challenge will revolve around Hydrogen. The challenge is to connect the latest research to dempands from society together with international partners, providing for example: first proof of principles, identifying and/or addressing knowledge gaps or practical implementation problems and suggest a way forward (e.g. next steps to implementation) and present these to the participating community. https://youtube.com/shorts/a75OWrDWV8I

Expected learning outcomes

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:

  • Plan and execute projects on Energy technology in an international project team.

  • Use individual knowledge and expertise in an interdisciplinary and international team to develop an innovative, practical and scientifically sound solution related to energy technology.

  • Understand more about the group dynamics and cultural aspects in e.g. communication in an international project team.

  • Build/Use computational tools and databases to draw conclusions regarding the topic of the project.

  • Communicate the results of aforementioned projects to audiences with different background levels.

  • Reflect on the most recent developments in Energy technology research (year specific) and the (lack of) application/implementation in society.
